Calathea is a genus of plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. It's possibly our favourite plant genus, and should be yours if you have a pet due to the fact that there is such a wide variety of leaf colours, shapes and sizes of Calatheas to choose from.

It's a clear winner for any pet-parent, and you'll soon start collection the different varieties and become obsessed with how unusual and striking the leaves are. The leaf patterns are so perfect and unusual that we often get asked if we paint the patterns on! Nope. That's in fact created by the best designer in the world...nature.

If Calatheas weren't already desirable enough, another plus is that they are fairly easy to maintain and can handle lower-light levels. Tick, tick, tick.

4. Haworthia

If you seem to kill every plant you bring home the Haworthia is for you. Accustomed to desert conditions, forgetting to water this plant is not a crime. All they ask for is plenty of sun and a water every 2-3 weeks. The Haworthia is a slower grower which means you can pot it in cute unconventional items such as mugs (as long as there is proper drainage) and makes a great desk plant.
